Household hazardous waste (HHW) represents up to 5% of municipal waste, but the potential risks of to the environment and health are disproportionate to its size. HHW such as paints, thinners, electrical appliances, oils, car batteries, pesticides, etc., should not be disposed to municipal waste landfills, but according to the current legislation, municipalities are obligated to arrange for separate HHW collection.

DETOX assists towns and municipalities to meet their legal obligations by providing separate collection of HHW in the form of mobile collection at pre-agreed and advertised dates, several times a year. In addition, in towns where DETOX operates its own plants, citizens may choose to bring their HHW directly to DETOX's facility during the working hours.

Separate collection of hazardous substances from citizens

DETOX was the first company and Banská Bystrica was the first city in Slovakia to introduce a system of separate collection of hazardous substances from citizens in 1996. In the first year, 14 tons of hazardous substances were separated in this way, and this amount increased every year. In 2019, 75 tons were collected in the system.
